How to change the Password on Income Tax Website - If the password is forgotten.


Password can be reset by following 4 options:
  1. Answer Secret Question
  2. Upload DSC
  3. Using OTP
  4. Using Aadhaar OTP
Step 1:
  1. Visit the income tax website www.incometaxindiaefing.gov.in
  2. On the homepage, click on ‘Reset’ button on the right hand side of the page


Step 2: 
  1. Enter the Income Tax user ID and Captcha.
  2. Then Press the “Continue” Button


Step 3:
Select one of the option from drop down list and press the Continue button:
  1. Answer Secret Question
  2. Upload DSC
  3. Using OTP
  4. Using Aadhaar OTP



Step 4 - Answer Secret Question 
  1. If you select the “Answer Secret Question “from drop down list in Step 3, then in next page you have to enter your birth Date and Select the secret question from the drop down list and enter the secret Answer and press the Submit button

  2. Once you enter the correct answer you will be directed to the next page to change the password. You can change the Password and access your account



Step 4 - Using Aadhaar OTP 
  1. If you select the “Aadhaar OTP“ option from drop down list in Step 3, then in next page you have to click on “Generate Aadhar OTP” tab

  2. You will receive the Aadhaar OTP on registered Mobile number with Aadhar. Enter OTP and enter the New Password and click on “I agree to validate my Aadhaar details with UIDAI” and press on Submit tab

  3. You can access the account once you press the submit button

  4. Prerequisite for using Aadhar OTP option:
  1. Aadhar Number should be registered with Income Tax
  2. Mobile number should be registered with Aadhaar to receive OTP





Step 4 - Using OTP

  1. If you select the “Using OTP“ option from drop down list in Step 3, then in next page you have following option to generate OTP to change the Password:
    1. On registered Mobile No and Email ID.
    2. On New Mobile No and Email ID.

  2. On registered Mobile No and Email ID
    If user select this option then user will get OTP on registered email ID and Mobile Number. User can then change the password in next window by entering the OTP

  3. On New Mobile No and Email ID:
    If user select this option then user have to provide any of the one detail entered in the last return filed along with the New Email ID and Mobile No:
    1. TDS/ TCS deduction details or
    2. Bank Account Number

Kindly note that user will have to wait for 12 hours to access the portal if user select New Email ID and Mobile Number Option.
